Job Description

Under direction of Lead Welder and Mechanical Supervision, the Journeyperson Welder performs a variety of duties relating to the fabrication, installation, and repair of sheet metal fixtures throughout the mill; repairs and replaces wires on cylinder machines; maintenance and construction welding using electric, oxyacetylene, heliarc, brazing, and soldering equipment; insures safety of self, others, and equipment in all work areas.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Welds cast iron, structural steel, stainless steel (plate and pipe), titanium, and other metals and alloys in the repair and construction of equipment and parts throughout the mill (welds piping up to 1,000 p.s.i.).
  • Proficient in various types of welding: MIG, TIG, Stick.
  • Makes butt or fillet joints in flat, vertical, or overhead positions when fusing metal objects together.
  • Lays out material, cuts and fabricates in accordance with sketches or blueprints.
  • Works in conjunction with other tradespeople (Mechanical Tech, Pipefitters, and Machinists) in erecting, dismantling, or repairing of machinery or equipment.
  • Installs wires and brazes copper parts using oxyacetylene torch or electric welding equipment.
  • Assists in on-the-job training of Intermediate Welders or Apprentices.
  • Works alone or in remote or elevated locations as directed. Job also involves working in confined spaces, as directed.
  • Crew assignments and duties may vary at times based upon job & skill requirement, as well as available crew personnel to complete the work safely and efficiently.
  • Ensures safety of personnel and equipment by consistently following safe practices and procedures with particular attention to fire prevention and use of personal protective equipment on all jobs as required; performs other related or comparable work as directed.
  • Attends and participates in the appropriate training for the use of fire extinguishing equipment and notification procedures should a small, containable fire ignite in the work area.
  • Serves as a member of the Pixelle Industrial Fire Team to mitigate risk and escalation of fires within the facility and provides assistance required by your craft, as laid out in the Pixelle handbook.

Educational Requirements:

  • Associate’s Degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two year college or technical school with six months to one year related experience and/or training; or 3-5 years Industrial welding experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Requirements: The nature of this job requires applicants to work from varying heights above the ground, as well as in confined space areas. Applicants must be capable of working in varying temperature and moisture conditions. Applicants must pass the POET fitness assessment. A DOT physical is also required for this position. Must be able to lift 5-30 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Job duties include the wearing of a respirator requiring a tight face seal
