Position Description

If you love and enjoy engaging in manual projects supporting the U.S Navy and our U.S Naval Ships, Serco has a great opportunity for you! Serco is hiring an Experienced Welder to be part of a dynamic team supporting our US. Navy Ships with equipment, and C5ISR system installations located in the beautiful surrounds of Newport News, Virginia. 

 

 

You will also play a critical role in ensuring that successful and safe work is performed on-board U.S. Naval Ships and our Military installations, which is vital to our Mission to protect and serve our Military.

 

In this role, you will:

  • Interpret specifications, drawings, blueprints, shop job orders and, process sheets.
  • Use a variety of ARC and gas welding equipment to fabricate or repair products such as foundations, cable collars, cable/pipe/vent hangers, cable tubes penetrations, studs, etc.
  • Perform related task such as thermal cutting (PLASMA or TORCH) and grinding.
  • Have knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.
  • Work on-board U.S. Naval Ships and military installations in an area that is somewhat uncomfortable due to drafts, noise, temperature variation and the like and with equipment where carelessness would probably result in minor cuts, bruises, muscle strains, serious injury, or death.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
  • A High School Diploma or GED.
  • 5 years of Shipboard experience.
  • 5 years of combined experience in the following areas:
    • Read drawings (Tradesman Level)
    • Carbon-arc gouge, ship fit, scribe foundations to suit ship
    • Pass steel/stainless SMAW & FCAW
    • Pass 5XXX aluminum MIG/aluminum 6G pipe TIG
    • Repair base material
    • Grind/plasma cut/fit/tack weld
  • The ability to obtain gain access to shipyards (NAVSTA & DBIDS), undergo a background investigation and pass a drug screening
  • Successful completion in the following Serco Welding Procedures within 30 days of starting with Serco for continued employment with Serco:
    • Serco-001 (GMAW, Aluminum – 4 position)
    • Serco-002 (SMAW, HY100-4 position)
    • Serco-003 (GMAW, Aluminum – 4 position)
    • Serco-007 (SMAW, C/S to S/S – 4 position)
    • Serco-012 (SMAW, S/S to S/S – 4 position)
  • Active participation in safety surveillances & walk-thrus
  • Provide mentorship & oversee OJT of junior welders, pipe-fitters, or ship-fitters.
  • Advanced understanding & comprehension of NAVSEA Standard Items.
  • Ability to work in efficient tandem with SF/PF/Welder teaming structure.
  • Your own tools of the trade and able to pass pre-certification company weld test.
  • Get respirator qualified and wear proper PPE throughout their work shift.
  • Familiarity with NAVSEA, standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of electrical repair, fabrication, and installation.
  • The ability to work in high heat spaces, climb shipyard dry dock stairs/ladders, work in kneeling position for layout of cable runs under false decking, lift 50 pounds with 80% of work requiring carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to 40 pounds for majority of shift while being in a standing, crouching, or walking position.
  • Attention to safety protocols, which is critical.
  • The willingness to travel up to 10% to various work sites.
  • The ability to relocate or work in Newport News, Virginia.
