Job description

You will serve as a WELDER LEADER in the Machine Shop Branch (Code 1440.2) Production Division (Code 1440) in the Naval Foundry and Propeller Center (NFPC) (Code 1400) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO LEAD OR SUPERVISE. Ability to use dew point analyzers, purging dams, oxygen analyzers, manometers and various contour and weldment size gages, Ability to utilize gauges tools and equipment used in the welder trade, such as regulators, flowmeters, rectifiers, pneumatic grinders, hand tools, etc. Ability to make decisions on problems encountered in routine operations, provide technical and supervisory direction to welders, shipfitters and helpers in the manufacture and repair of propeller and propulsor components and castings utilized on naval vessels and the fabrication of weldments. Ability to use approved methods and procedures to meet welding specification requirements. Ability to answer questions on welder procedures, policies, instructions, or other directives and checking in work in progress. Ability to operate complicated mechanical, electrical and pneumatic equipment and instruments. Ability to interpret work instructions and job orders, setting the pace and demonstrating proper work methods. Ability to perform electric arc welding utilizing various processes, such as mig, tig and shielded electrode, in the repair and manufacture of propeller and propulsor components, castings and weldments.
